1. Do Now: What makes a movie scary? List the things that you think every good scary movie should have.
2. Chart responses to Do Now
3. With a partner, group or alone, write a one-page scary short story that uses some of the elements on the chart.

• These short stories will be developed over the course of the unit.
• This initial writing piece is designed to get students thinking about the genre and being aware of their own existing knowledge of the genre.

• Assessment:
• Students will demonstrate understanding by writing a short story with suspenseful themes. (Short term)
• Students will succesfully identify elements of suspense in the writings of Edgar Allen Poe and other writers. . (Long term)
