How do we identify the rhyming pattern of a sonnet?

Text: Romeo and Juliet, Act 1, Scene 5, lines 95-108

Materials:

  • Lines 95-108 copied on a single page, writ large.
  • Chart paper, with lines 95-108 written.

Development of Learning Activity:

  1. Select two readers, to read lines 95-108.
  2. In groups, try to find a pattern of words that rhyme.
    • Use letters to group rhymes together.
    • What pattern do the letters go in?
    • With the class, elicit pattern from students and write it on the chart paper, using different colors for different rhymes.
    • Develop a list of rules for identifying sonnets.

Rule #1: ABAB CDCD EFEF GG

Rule #2: 14 lines

Rule #3: 3 stanzas of 4 lines each, plus one couplet.

Assessment:

  • Students will demonstrate understanding by correctly identifying pattern. (Short term)
  • Students will succesfully identify sonnet patterns in future texts. (Long term)
